"Own your channel" is advice nobody ever finishes saying.

Everyone repeats the advice. Very few say what you would concretely have at the end of it.

Own your channel. Build your own pipeline. Stop renting your customers.

You will read all of those on any business forum. They are good advice. They are also where the advice usually stops, right before the useful part.

So here is the finished version. What would you actually have, at the end of it?

Four things, and none of them is a website

People hear own your channel and think it means build a better website. A website is part of it, but on its own it is just another place you are not being found.

1. A list of people who have paid you

Names, numbers, what you did and when. In a spreadsheet is fine. In your phone is not, because you cannot look at your phone and see everyone you worked for in 2023.

This is the single most valuable thing on the list and the one almost nobody has. If a platform closed your account tomorrow, this list is what you would still own.

2. Being findable by your own name

Someone hears about you from a neighbour. They search your name. What happens next should not be a directory page with your old number on it.

That is a low bar and a lot of businesses do not clear it. It is also free to fix.

3. A reputation attached to you

Reviews on a platform belong to the platform. Two hundred five-star reviews there do not follow you when you leave.

Reviews on your Google profile are attached to your business. Same effort from the customer, completely different ownership. Ask for them there.

4. A reason for people to come back

Most trades do a job and vanish. The customer liked you, and then forgot your name within a year.

One message at the right moment fixes that. Asking properly is a skill worth learning, and it is the cheapest work you will ever get.

It is slower, and that is the real objection

Nobody avoids this because they disagree with it. They avoid it because a platform gives you a job this afternoon and this gives you a job in eight months.

That is a genuine problem when there is a van payment due. Anyone telling you to just stop buying leads has not been in that position.

So do both. Keep the tap on while you build. The mistake is not using platforms. It is using them for five years and building nothing alongside.

Start this week, with an hour

Open a spreadsheet. Go back through last year's invoices. Write down every customer, their number, and what you did.

That is the whole first step. It is dull and it is not clever, and it is worth more than any tool you could buy this year.

Where we fit, honestly

We are part of the second item on that list. hailera gives your business its own answers, published by you, that your website and other apps can ask. It is yours, you edit it, and it is free.

It does nothing for the other three. It will not build your customer list, ask for your reviews, or get anyone to come back. Those are the parts that matter most and they are entirely yours to do.

Written by the team at hailera — we help small businesses answer customer questions without being there.
